I was born on Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. The son of a career military man and southern homemaker, I lived throughout the South, Midwest and Eastern seaboard. I currently reside in Cranberry Township north of Pittsburgh, PA.
My leadership journey started at a young age by joining the Boy Scouts in Akron, Ohio. I was a Patrol Leader in Troop 65, visited Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico, and earned both the Order of the Arrow and God and Country awards.
I learned how to be a supportive member and good teammate in high school through membership in the senior choir, mixed ensemble, student council and athletics – cross country, track, baseball and basketball. I was elected Student Council president my senior year and garnered academic honors in the National Honor Society and basketball honors as an All-City, District, and Regional performer.
I graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Speech Communication from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio. I ran track and captained the basketball team. I captured all conference basketball honors my sophomore, junior and senior year. I also was recognized my senior year as a small college basketball All-America (honorable mention) and later was inducted into the Case basketball Hall of Fame.
I started my working career with Sears in Frankfort, KY and there I began to hone my financial acumen in budget management, revenue generation and sales training. I earned a masters degree in Public Affairs with a concentration in Personnel Administration from Kentucky State University. I also joined Phi Beta Sigma Inc., a fraternity that promotes brotherhood, scholarship and service.
Upon completion of my masters degree program, I embarked on a 36-year career with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Strategic initiatives, policy development, and sales training were key components as a human resources professional in a one billion dollar business unit. As a District Manager, I am responsible for budget management, revenue generation ($12 million) and policy maintenance while supervising 101 associates.
Working through multi levels in my fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., I was elected the National Director of Bigger and Better Business. In that position I developed a worldwide membership and business directory that documented member businesses and services. I also coordinated, collected, and reviewed the global chapter finance and social reports to recognize a “Chapter of the Year” at Phi Beta Sigma’s annual International Conclave.
I joined my home club, The Cranberry Area Toastmasters Club, in 2006. I am a charter member of the ProMasters Toastmasters club founded in 2013. I joined after researching the internet for communication training because I wanted to be a professional speaker. Never afraid to speak I felt I should hone my skills. Along this journey I discovered the leadership aspect of Toastmasters. With the help of a great team in 2012-2013, I led District 13 to become a Select Distinguished District. In 2015 I was elected a member of Toastmasters International Board of Directors.
I am a published author. I have written two books of poetry: A Walk In the Park and The Sounds of Truth, a self-help book, If This Is a Secret Why Am I Telling It? and recorded a jazz spoken word CD – When I Think of You. Photography is a personal passion. I find the most joy when I can take pictures of my grandchildren – five girls and one boy.
Forty years of experience in strategic development, human resources and sales management, combined with my communication and leadership skills are a solid foundation to lead Toastmasters International as Second Vice President.
